Commercial waste collection with Birmingham City Council

Birmingham City Council operates commercial waste collection services through its partner Veolia. The council offer regular commercial waste collection for:

  • General business waste
  • Paper and cardboard recycling
  • Food waste
  • Glass recycling
  • Mixed recycling

Birmingham City Council guarantees that no collected waste will travel more than 10 miles, significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with their collection. They also guarantee that no collected waste will be exported abroad.

Unlike other commercial waste providers in Birmingham, the Council is a not-for-profit organisation that does not charge VAT on its waste collection. For more information, visit the Birmingham Council’s Commercial Waste Services page.

💡Birmingham City Council do not offer hazardous waste collection and other specialist waste collection services. Private waste providers in Birmingham offer a more comprehensive range of waste collection services.

Birmingham City Council’s Energy Recovery Facility

The commercial waste collected is processed on the outskirts of Birmingham at their energy recovery facility in Tyseley.

Using the energy recovery facility (ERF) that Veolia built for Birmingham council in 1996, they aim to convert commercial waste that cannot be recycled into electricity.

Utilising its incinerator facility, Veolia operates a two-stream plant, each boiler specifically designed to process 23.5 tonnes of waste per hour. The facility is equipped with a turbo-generator that exports 25MW of electricity, which is sold on the National Grid, to financially benefit the city.

Additionally, the ERF recovers several thousand tonnes of ferrous metals annually, contributing to the recycling process.
